Last week due to horrific bombing in Brussel’s International Airport and a metro station about 34 innocent civilians lost their lives and couple of hundreds of other civilian were injured. This tragedy made international headline news, rightly so. But late last week over 29 people while attending a soccer match in a were killed in a stadium south of Baghdad, Iraq by the same barbaric group named ISIS, while over 60 others were injured and tragedy barely made the headlines.
Does it mean the lives of innocent Iraqis are less important than those of Europeans? Why didn’t the Western Media have the same type of coverage for this horrific bombing In Iraq as they had for the Belgium attack? These innocent people were attending a soccer match when they were brutally murdered, men, women, and children without any distinction in their social, political, economic, gender, or religious affiliations. It was truly mass killing that mandated the world attention, but did not make the main headlines.
ISIS creates fear in every man, woman, child so to become submissive to the ISIS control. We must all understand that loss of any innocent life anywhere in the world is important and as such we should not minimize loss of lives in one part of the world, while cherish loss of lives in another part of the world.
It should be noted that biggest losers and victims of ISIS have been the Moslems. When comparing the death count of non-Muslims to those of Muslims killed by ISIS, there is no comparison. If we add up all the innocent non-Muslims individuals being killed and injured by ISIS, the total would be around 300 dead and 500+ injured which is total of attack at Charlie Hebdo in January, Paris attacks in November and recent Brussel’s tragedy, while the total number of innocent Muslims killed by ISIS during the same period in Iraq, Syria could easily tops 1,000 dead and hundreds more injured. Killing innocent civilians in areas where ISIS or wants to penetrate are normal daily activities. ISIS creates fear in every man, woman, child so to become submissive to the ISIS control. We must all understand that loss of any innocent life anywhere in the world is important and as such we should not minimize loss of lives in one part of the world, while cherish loss of lives in another part of the world.
If the West is truly want to fight ISIS one way is to let the ISIS know that the West cherishes all lives regardless where they are. ISIS has shown to be a formidable enemy and as such must be dealt with in a serious and effective manner. How to fight ISIS will be discussed in another article, but here the emphasis is on the existence of double standard. If the public in the Western countries become more aware of the loss of lives and the damages that ISIS is causing in Iraq, Syria and other parts of the middle East and Northern Africa, that is Libya and Egypt, then perhaps the sympathy for the people of that region as well as support for more effective battle with ISIS would be increased.
