Almost ten years of Stephen Harper’s reign over Canada is over and a new era has started with the election of Justin Trudeau, son of former Prime Minister, Pierre Trudeau. This young and good looking prime minister plans to take back Canada to pre Harper’s era.
When Mr. Harper became Prime Minister of Canada, he brought with him conservatism and more capitalism. He became an image of George W. Bush for Canada. Canada was known for her passivism and humanitarian policies. Canada was country of peace and harmony and did not engage in any sort of conflicts. However, under Prime Minister Harper, Canada became another United States and getting involved in international conflicts and sending troops to Afghanistan and the Middle East.
It is true that Canada is an ally of the United States, but that does not mean to blindly follow and enter into conflicts in which Canada had nothing to gain and was not in any imminent danger of harm. Further, Mr. Harper’s capitalist views did not help the economy of Canada. Had his vision and political philosophy been successful, he would not have lost the elections. All economic indicators show that during Mr. Harper’s reign the economy suffered and real wages were decreased.
Further, Canada’s humanitarian image was damaged during Mr. Harper’s reign as helping the needy and foreign refugees became less important, but focusing on creating wealth for upper class became priority.
Mr. Trudeau has promised to change that direction and focus more on helping the needy and strengthening the middle income families. Also opening up Canada’s door to the refugees, in particular the ones from the Middle East. Canada has always been known as home for refugees and under the leadership of Mr. Trudeau that long term commitment to help the refugees will become reality again.
Congratulations to Mr. Justin Trudeau and wishing you all the bests..
